Can Hemp Oil Extract stop Canine Epileptic Seizures?

Watching a dog have a seizure is terrifying. Especially if it's a dog you love.

Here at Cannimal we receive weekly calls from animal guardians hoping to treat their dog's seizures and epilepsy. This can be due to genetics but lately more and more calls are coming from in from animals who were taking oral heart worm or flea meds.

Did you know the FDA issued a warning about four chewable flea and tick medications? The warning cautions that the products could lead to neurological issues such as seizures. The brands are isoxazoline-based Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard or Simparica.

Epilepsy is a persistent (chronic) condition of the brain.  It involves unpredictable abnormal electrical discharges or misfiring of brain cells (neurons).  This misfiring in the brain can cause episodes of bodily convulsions, loss of coordination, loss of consciousness or altered sensory states.

There can be serious side effects resulting from the use of conventional anticonvulsants- like phenobarbital- that many dogs are prescribed to control seizures. These can include nausea, headaches, loss of hair, swelling of gum tissue, depression, poor coordination (ataxia), liver failure, depressed blood counts, sedation, unsteadiness, double vision, weight gain, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, irritability, gum dysplasia, hirsutism (excessive growth of hair) and changes in mood.

Unfortunately, seizures are very common in dogs. Idiopathic epilepsy, the single most common canine seizure disorder, is reported to occur in anywhere from 0.5 to 5.7 percent of all dogs.

Enter Cannibinoids

A 2013 study published by the British Journal of Pharmacology found that Cannabinoid based medicine can stop seizures due to its “significant anticonvulsant effects.” Using the substance on a number of animal models such as rats and mice, they found that the extract was able to effectively stop seizures. Researchers noted, “Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that cannabis extracts rich in Cannabidivarin  and Cannibinoids can exert significant anticonvulsant effects…

The American Epilepsy Society published a study confirming that hemp oil is effective in treating seizures stating that Hemp oil extract reduces the frequency of these seizures by 45%.

Considering how devastating seizures can be for both the animal and their human family, this kind of success rate makes hemp oil a true GIFT to our animal friends.

How can Cannimal help support your animal?

Animal guardians are using both our RELAX and WELLNESS Formulas for seizure dogs with amazing success.

Romeo's Story

Romeo is a 10 year old dog that started having grand mal seizures 4 years ago.  Untreated, Romeo would have 3 to 4 seizures a week.  After being on a seizure medication for one year the medication became ineffective and Romeo started having seizures, requiring a change in medication.
In April 2018, the veterinary neurologist prescribed phenobarbital for Romeo.  Three weeks later Romeo had his first pancreatitis bout.  He had never had pancreatitis before.  We researched phenobarbital and found that pancreatitis is a side effect of phenobarbital.  We discussed our findings with the veterinary neurologist who said it was highly unlikely and would not change his prescribed medication.
Our primary vet made suggestions regarding dietary changes that were implemented.  We discussed the possibility of treating Romeo with Cannimal Relax Formula to our primary vet and neurologist vet and both said it would not be effective. In September 2018 Romeo had another bout of pancreatitis but again the neurologist claimed it was not associated with the medication. In December 2018 Romeo had his third bout of pancreatitis. Neither our primary vet or neurological vet knew what we could do to help eliminate these pancreatitis bouts. We were instructed to just get him into the emergency clinic as soon as the symptoms commenced. This proposal was unacceptable approach because it is not the way we want to manage our dogs health issues and every pancreatitic bout damages the pancreas and other internal organs.
So in December 2018 I started giving Romeo Cannimal Relax Formula. After a couple of weeks on the Relax Formula, I slowly started lowering Romeo's phenobarbital dose.
Now Romeo is off the phenobarbital and seizure free, hopefully forever… THANK YOU Cannimal for saving Romeo's life!

Whether you are treating seizures, acute anxiety or chronic separation anxiety, Cannimal’s RELAX Formula is a unique formula unlike anything else… First, it combines the power of Full Spectrum Hemp Oil Extract r with the calming qualities of Passionflower and its ability to elicit GABA currents in the brain.
GABA has an inhibitory effect on the brain, accounting for Passionflower’s anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) AND anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) properties. Studies show Passionflower has a similar effect as diazepam (Valium) without the pharmaceutical side effects.

 Rhea's Story

12/18/19 Hi I hope all is well. Just wanted to give you an update. Rhea has a couple more seizures but they were not even half as bad as before. I found by giving her the product while seizing she pretty much came right out of it. We have also gave it to her when we noticed her just about to go into in and gave her 5 pumps and omg no seizures. We are beyond the moon and keeping the faith that we will be able to fully remove her meds when the Cannimal Formula is full effect
12/28/18 She still is seizing but no more clusters, the length of them are definitely shorter and I am positive it is @cannimal_ Relax Formula that broke the clusters...
We are so thrilled definitely a step in the right direction! We are staying positive that in the next couple months she will go on a seizure free period for longer lengths of time. Right now her seizures are once a week - before starting your oil she was every 2-3 days!
1/2/19 I just have to tell you that she was going into a seizure with a head shake. My husband was able to pump in her mouth which he believes 10 pumps. It stopped almost immediately she didn't go into a Grand Mal!

Zach's Story
Zach is a 15 year old yellow lab named who we rescued when he was only 13 months old. We've been through a lot together and have had many fun times since he has been a loving member of our family.

Zach doesn't get around too well these days... He has trouble with his back legs and needs help getting up most of the time. About 6 or 8 months ago, Zach had a pretty bad seizure and it scared the heck out of us. Then, he didn't have any more seizures until a few weekends ago. I was late coming back from a hike and I get this tearful call from my wife, saying he is having multiple seizures and his breathing is very labored, and when will I be home. I ended up staying up with him and not getting to bed until 12:30 am.
I called my Vet and ask her about hemp oil, as I have heard that they have had really good luck using it on children with seizures. To my grateful surprise, she mentions Erika, who I later find out is the founder and CEO of Cannimal. I called her and she ended up bringing us 2 bottles of RELAX Formula to our house in Encinitas on a Sunday afternoon. One bottle for Zach and the other for my daughter's dog, who has separation anxiety.
I gave Zach a dose right away. The recommended dose for a dog of his weight (93 lbs) is 2 squirts in the side of the mouth, twice a day. I started him out with just 1 squirt and did that for a few days. I was home on the following Tuesday and he had another seizure. So, I immediately gave him 2 squirts and have been giving him the recommended dose ever since.

No more seizures! What a relief! I have noticed other subtleties about him, also. Being as old as he is he was really getting to have problems with incontinence, while lying down, sleeping. That has mostly gone away after we started him on the Cannimal RELAX Formula.

He also seems to be more with it these days. There are other things that have improved about him that is hard to explain. But, I have definitely seen improvement in him. If you're a long time dog owner, and you are at the point where you feel you need to use this product, I think you'll see for yourself the subtle ways your dog seems to come around, actually rather quickly!

Just a word about Erika! After talking to her, the service she provided us by bringing the product to the house, and reading about her and feeling her empathy and the care and intelligence that she brings to trying to really help animals, I'm very impressed! She's a class act and this is a great product! I would recommend anyone with a need contact her. You'll be glad you did!
-Mike

A 2013 study published by the British Journal of Pharmacology found that marijuana can stop seizures due to its “significant anticonvulsant effects.” Researchers used an extract made from the whole cannabis plant. Using the substance on a number of animal models such as rats and mice, they found that the extract was able to effectively stop seizures.

Researchers noted, “Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that cannabis extracts rich in Cannabidivarin and Cannabinoids can exert significant anticonvulsant effects… These findings strongly support the further clinical development of Cannabidivarin BDSs for treatment of epilepsy.”

Dr. Paul Consroe of the University of Arizona suggests that hemp oil extract may have distinctive therapeutic value as an anticonvulsant in and of itself. He found that while high doses of THC can trigger convulsions in seizure susceptible animals, the administration of cannabidiol in similar or higher does not cause convulsions.  His studies concluded that hemp oil extract might have powerful anticonvulsant properties, which counteract the muscle-exciting effects of THC when both compounds are delivered to the body in marijuana.

Hemp Oil Extract has demonstrated the ability to reduce or even eliminate seizures (Blair, Deshpande & DeLorenzo, 2015) (Rosenberg, Tsien, Whalley & Devinsky, 2015) (Szaflarski & Bebin, 2014) (Devinsky, et al., 2014).

Gaston's Story @gaston_aka_chunk

“Just got Gaston’s pheno levels results and they have gone down significantly ! He’s still on the phenobarbital for his seizures but I’ve been able to cut down on the dosage and I 100% give credit to Your Cannimal Formula. My plan is to continue to cut the dosage slowly until I can get him off and have him on 100% hemp oil only ! We’re so happy!” -Juniette

Research also finds that cannabinoids are effective in the treatment of severe pediatric epilepsy disorders like Dravet syndrome, Doose syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (Porter & Jacobson, 2013).

Hemp Oil Extract has also been shown to improve sleep (53%), alertness (71%), and mood (63%) in epileptic children (Hussain, et al., 2015).
