Pot for Pets Legalized in California 2019

Veterinarians will soon prescribe Cannabis. Are they ready?

A new bill has passed that will allow California Veterinarians to prescribe THC and CBD to pets.

A new bill has passed that will allow California Veterinarians to prescribe THC and CBD to pets.

AB 2215 was signed by Governor Brown on September 27 and takes effect on January 1, 2019.

The CVMA (Califorina Veterinary Medical Association) was a driving force in the passage of this bill, that will allow veterinarians to discuss the use of cannabis with their clients.

The question is: are the veterinarians ready to prescribe?

Many veterinarians are accustomed to using generic response pharmaceuticals. I hope the CVMA takes their industry education seriously with more workshops on information such as: dosing protocols, how The Endocannabinoid System works and the difference/effects of the different types of products on the market! Not all products are created equally.

I look forward to continuing to assist in moving this very needed conversation forward!

CBD works wonders for dog seizures

Studies show CBD is an incredibly 45% effective in treating epilepsy seizures.

Studies show CBD is an incredibly 45% effective in treating epilepsy seizures.

I get weekly calls from humans hoping to treat their animal friend’s seizures and epilepsy. This can be due to genetics but lately more and more calls are coming from in from animals who were taking oral heartworm and/or flea meds!

Did you know the FDA issued a warning about four chewable flea and tick medications, cautioning that the products could lead to neurological issues such as seizures. The brands are isoxazoline based Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard or Simparica.

There can be serious side effects resulting from the use of conventional anticonvulsants- like phenobarbital- that many dogs are prescribed to control seizures. These can include nausea, headaches, loss of hair, swelling of gum tissue, depression, poor coordination (ataxia), liver failure, depressed blood counts, sedation, unsteadiness, double vision, weight gain, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, irritability, gum dysplasia, hirsutism (excessive growth of hair) and changes in mood.

The Gift

A 2013 study published by the British Journal of Pharmacology found that Cannabinoid based medicine can stop seizures due to its “significant anticonvulsant effects.” Using the substance on a number of animal models such as rats and mice, they found that the extract was able to effectively stop seizures. Researchers noted, “Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that cannabis extracts rich in CBDV and CBD can exert significant anticonvulsant effects…

The American Epilepsy Society published a study confirming that CBD oil is effective in treating seizures stating that CBD reduces the frequency of these seizures by 45%.

Considering how devastating seizures can be for both the animal and their human family, this kind of success rate makes CBD a true GIFT to our planet.

Read Bella’s Success story below:

“Bella is an 11 year old puggle who started having seizures as a puppy then she had more seizures as she got older- one even lasted 30 min! The vet ran test couldn’t find any cause for her seizures. HE recommended the typical seizure meds- Phenobarbital or Potassium Bromide.. I had a boxer that also had a seizure disorder and we used these drugs on him and he lost the ability to use his hind legs which the vet explained was a side effect of Potassium Bromide, because of this I elected to steer clear of these drugs. We tried many different CBD pet brands, Bella had seizures on all of them. But then, in May, I found Cannimal and ordered Bella’s first bottle, and she has not had a seizure since!”

Julian from Hawaii Pet Beat gave us a great review!

Cannimal Formulas are available in HAWAII at our retail partner there: MR HEMP CBD in Honolulu!

Text and review via HAWAII PET BEAT

It’s time for our pup’s to relax and enjoy a stress free moment with a little holistic touch from Cannimal.

Cannimal is “ailment specific animal products combining the healing power of adaptogenic herbs + CBD”.

CBD which is the non-psychotic element in the cannabis plant is proving to do wonders for many pups suffering from all sorts of injuries, illnesses and stress too. CBD is NOT marijuana and will NOT make your pup’s high, feel stoned or become addicted.

Cannimal founder and fellow dog lover/owner Erika created this product after wanting to help one of her pup’s suffering from canine cancer. She found that CBD can help the body and mind to achieve a natural balance and help our pets heal and/or treat symptoms without the worry of chemical side effects or damaging any organs with prolong use.

For the purpose of this blog, I’m going to talk about Cannimal’s Relax formula which helps relieve stress and anxiety.

Relax is a hemp extract with passion flower. Passion flower aids the body to “adapt to the effects of stress, fatigue, trauma and anxiety”.

This particular formula peeked my interest with the 4th of July celebrations that just past. After reading more about this product, I jumped at ordering it to try to see if it would help my dog Yuki who is a very Nervous Nelly with any form of loud noises.

The shipping was fast and there is excellent communication from Cannimal too. I gave Yuki and a couple of my other dogs their recommended doses right when I started to hear fireworks. Needless to say I was impressed when none of them seemed to really mind all the goings on outside. Yuki was just a little scared still, but not nearly as bad as I am used to seeing her.

I’ve never had much success with other CBD oils administering them directly into my dog’s mouth because I think they must have tasted awful, but Cannimal has either a natural beef or chicken flavor and all my dogs took it without a problem.

Along with Yuki, I have started giving some to Julian to treat his compressed disc and to take the edge off of being around other dogs when we go out in public since he’s still working through some stress after being attacked. He’s doing so much better now too.

One of the great things about Cannimal’s website is all the information that is given to you. Erika really lays it all out there for you and she encourages anyone to reach out to her either via email or her social media outlets with questions or concerns. Her top concern is that you get all your questions answered, are properly informed and if you’re not happy with the product, you can get your money back.

Cannimal does have other specific oils like their Relieve for pain and inflammation, Eva’s Blend to help with tumors and canine cancer and also Everyday Wellness to help with daily needs like arthritis, epilepsy, seizures, digestive issues and more.

You can purchase Cannimal here on Oahu at Mr Hemp CBD Honolulu off of School Street or online via their link below.

I highly highly recommend checking out Cannimal’s website to find out all the benefits and ways CBD oil can help your pup or just to get educated on this holistic treatment to aid our pets in so many ways.

CBD FOR SKIN ALLERGIES: BYE BYE PREDNISONE!

An itchy-scratchy dog is a sight to see.

They never seem to find any relief.

They might spend most of their day rolling, licking, scratching, and even biting at their skin.

Sometimes they scratch so much they lose hair and irritate the area until it bleeds.

IMG_2097.jpg

Skin allergies and dermatitis are annoying for both our animals as well as us- their companions! Oftentimes, we must turn to pharmaceuticals like Prednisone- a pharmaceutical filled with steroids- to help our pet.

Many allergy-prone dogs end up needing Prednisone on a regular basis. Long term side effects of continual Prednisone treatment include:

  • Increased thirst and urination.

  • Increased hunger.

  • Panting (especially dogs)

  • General loss of energy.

  • Development or worsening of infections (especially bacterial skin infections)

  • Vomiting or nausea (less common)

However, there is an alternative to try! As more and more people learn about the safe administration of CBD, many animal guardian are turning to the powerful anti-inflammation, pain relieving power of CBD to not only alleviate their animal’s suffering but also support the body system’s ability to fend off allergic attacks.

Skin allergies are most common in dogs, especially Terriers and Golden Retrievers.

Just like humans, skin allergies are the result of a weak immune system under assault by mast cells, the “agents” who produce the histamines that cause the itchy, irritated skin. These allergy “attacks” in dogs may be due to seasonal changes, fleas, mold, dust mites, as well as all kinds of foods.

HOW CAN CBD HELP ANIMALS with SKIN ALLERGIES?

The Endocannabinoid System is the system found in all mammals that interacts with Cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. Studies suggest this system regulates homeostasis or balance in the body. The Endocannabinoid system is made of up CB1 and CB2 receptors found all over the body.

(Read more https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18426493)

Studies show that a dog’s skin has CB1 and CB2 receptors located directly in keratinocytes, one of the most common cell types in the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin).

In 2013, researchers from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Teramo, Italy, also explored the effects of CBD on the skin.

The researchers noted that CBD was able to control the proliferation and differentiation of skin cells.

Skin allergies and dermatitis in your dog can be treated in 2 ways: both topically and internally.

Here at Cannimal we suggest using a tincture and a topical to effectively treat your dog’s skin allergies for healthy skin “from the inside out.”

TOPICAL:

A topical product can be used effectively directly on the location of the problem.

Topical CBD used directly on your pet’s irritated skin will provide direct support of the cells in the irritated area, as well as powerful pain relief. Our CANNIMAL GOLD Concentrate Syringe is a cost effective way to apply a potent dose of topical CBD (our GOLD Concentrate CAN BE USED BOTH TOPICALLY AND INTERNALLY) using a very small amount of actual oil. Our CANNIMAL GOLD oil can be applied directly on the skin in tiny but super potent “grain of rice” size (appx 20-25mg of CBD) on your dogs itchy-est areas.

INTERNAL:

Cannimal's RELIEVE Formula with Full Spectrum CBD (below .3%THC) and Turmeric can powerfully boost your dog’s body ability to control the behavior of the mast cells that accompany allergic reactions as well as fight inflammation.  Studies show CBD can control the proliferation of mast cells- the white blood cells that get activated when an allergen enters your body and produces histamines. Histamine production is what causes that annoying itchiness and irritation associated with allergies.

Both CBD and Turmeric are powerful anti-inflammatory agents that can help soothe the inflamed areas of your dog’s skin and provide relief!

TOP 5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe and Sane During Fireworks

The 2 busiest days at animal shelters across the country are July 5th and January 1st.

Why? Animals who panic and run during holiday fireworks.

6de4a17e46d2a42314661b1174449fc2.jpg

The sound and fury of fireworks can be too much for sensitive animals- dogs in particular may run in fear and frenzy.

With fireworks season on the way,

it’s essential to plan ahead for your dog’s safety and sanity- and your peace of mind.

5 Ways to Keep Your Animal Safe During Fireworks Season!

1.     Keep your dog or cat indoors. An animal’s first instinct is to run. Keep them inside and give them a safe place to “hide” inside your home- away from windows.

2.     Make sure your animal’s tags/microchip are up to date.  IF your dog runs gets lost, current tags and microchip will ensure they get back to you faster.

3.     Exercise your animal before the fireworks begin. Getting rid of any excess, excited energy means less energy for your nervous dog or cat later that night.

4.     Distract your dogs with fun treats, their favorite toy, and lots of hugs. Our animals count on us for our leadership.  Use your calm and soothing energy to alleviate stress in your pack.

5.     Use a natural calming and anti-anxiety CBD supplement such as Cannimal’s best selling RELAX formulated with Passionflower. Multiple scientific studies show that CBD has a strong anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect. Cannimal's RELAX blend combines Full Spectrum CBD with the calming power of Passionflower.

Scientists believe passionflower works by increasing levels of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is thought to have a natural calming effect and is believed to reduce feelings of of anxiety and fear by decreasing neuronal excitability.

HAVE YOU EVER LOST YOUR DOG BECAUSE of SUMMERTIME FIREWORKS?
💥
The July 4th weekend creates a “perfect storm” for missing pets. Statistics show that more dogs are lost over the 4th of July holiday than any other time of the year. Why? The booming sounds are too much for them to bear. Dogs perceive frequencies almost twice that of human ears, they can also hear sounds approximately four times farther away than humans.

When a dog is scared they have 2 speeds! Fast and faster. Be safe and make sure you dog isn't running the streets scared this 4th of July.

CBD for CANCER?

In 2013 I lost my beloved dog Eva Chan to Cancer (Hemangiosarcoma).

Her death had a profound effect on me. I felt responsible for her suffering, but didn't know what to do.

Eva Chan and I just after she was diagnosed. She was given 1 month to live. With Turkey Tail and lots of care, I kept her alive 4 more months. If I had only known then what I know now.

Eva Chan and I just after she was diagnosed. She was given 1 month to live. With Turkey Tail and lots of care, I kept her alive 4 more months. If I had only known then what I know now.

MY STORY

Eva was a very special dog. I am not sure how to describe it. She was just that kind of dog that touched your heart. Other people noticed this quality in her as well. She was calm, easy, and yet very protective and loyal. She seemed to teach you things just by being around her.

Eva Chan was the kind of dog you only find once or twice in your life.

Since her death, I have been deeply interested (and appalled) by the cancer epidemic in dogs and cats. When Eva died in 2013, there was little to no information on how to use Cannabis to treat animals with Cancer.

If I had only known then what I know now.

Eva Chan and I a few months before she passed.

Eva Chan and I a few months before she passed.

I never used CBD or THC while my dog Eva Chan suffered through her battle with Cancer. Why? Because I was actually terrified it would kill her. I couldn’t find any information on the subject, there were no products that had reliable dosing information, and no anecdotal testimonials to read.

THE STATISTICS

Cancer is the #1 disease-related killer of dogs and cats.

An estimated 6 million dogs and nearly 6 million cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The Veterinary Cancer Society states: cancer is the leading cause of death in 47% of dogs, especially dogs over age ten, and 32% of cats.

THE SCIENCE

I have always seen and known the power of Cannabis as a plant and even wrote an essay on the legalization of Cannabis- back in 1995!

Since then- and particularly in the last few years- the amount of information on the internet and in clinical studies has grown exponentially.

 Cancer is gross.

Cancer is gross.

Over 15,000 studies have been done on Cannabis and Cancer, and the message is clear.

The use of cannabinoids as anticancer agents has positive results.

In “The use of cannabinoids as anticancer agents” Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, Volume 74, 6 March 2017, Pages 57 the study shows:

The endocannabinoid system may play a dual role on the regulation of tumor generation and progression.

  • Administration of THC and other cannabinoids exert anticancer actions in animal models of cancer.

  • THC and other cannabinoid receptor-ligands induce cancer cell death and inhibit tumor angiogenesis.

  • Cannabinoids enhance the anticancer activity of other antineoplastic agents in animal models of cancer.

  • Cannabinoids are currently being tested as anticancer agents in phase I/II clinical studies

In essence, cannabinoids exert palliative effects on some cancer-associated symptoms. In addition, evidences obtained during the last fifteen years support that these compounds can reduce tumor growth in animal models of cancer. Cannabinoids have been shown to activate an ER-stress related pathway that leads to the stimulation of autophagy-mediated cancer cell death. In addition, cannabinoids inhibit tumor angiogenesis and decrease cancer cell migration.

The Beauty of the Cannabis Plant.

The Beauty of the Cannabis Plant.

 WHAT DOES THC DO??

1. THC is anti-proliferative. Meaning that it inhibits cancer cells from reproducing. One of the hallmarks of cancer cells is that they keep replicating, they are immortal and unstoppable, that’s the problem. “THC inhibits protein synthesis so that tumors cannot grow.” (Dr. Donald Tashkin Pulmonary and Critical care UCSF)

2. An antiangiogenic effect. Here THC inhibits the ability of cancer cells to grow new blood vessels. Stop blood vessel formation and you prevent cancers from feeding and oxygenating thus encouraging their demise. (My dog Eva's Cancer spread from her leg to her lungs- all through the blood vessels)

3. Anti-metastatic effect. THC prevents cancers from spreading from the main tumor into other parts of the body. Keeping a primary tumor from metastasizing is of paramount importance in reducing death rates in cancers. The mets are which generally kill the patient by disrupting organ function and starving the patient of vital nutrients.

4. THC has a powerful apoptotic effect. Meaning that THC induces cancer cells to commit suicide. This is a feature of normal cells but malignant cells have lost that ability so they live forever. This effect hastens the death of cancer cells while leaving normal cells untouched.

5. THC stimulates CB receptors on tumors to produce ceramide. Ceramide is a compound that enters cancer cells and inactivates the cell’s energy source the mitochondria. This leads to cell death.

Anecdotally, THC and CBD have shown success with Cancer patients. Cannimal's first patient was a Cancer dog, the handsome Toby.

HAPPY CANNIMAL: VERA

Vera uses both the Eva’s Blend Formula as well as the Cannimal Gold Concentrate- (This testimonial is incredible and very special to me for many reasons!)

🐾

Vera is a 12 year old Golden Retriever who was diagnosed with Cancer earlier this year. She has had one limb amputated to try to remove the cancer. Vera has been using Eva’s Blend Cancer Support Formula, as well as our Cannimal Gold Concentrate and Rick Simpson Oil (RSO is not available through Cannimal as we are not currently licensed to sell medical Cannabis in Florida where Vera lives)

🐾

“We started using Cannimal Eva’s Blend formula and the Cannimal Gold Concentrate as well as RIck Simpson Oil in February 2018. We feel the combination of products is helping Vera immensely. She has lived 5 months longer than expected and she’s doing great despite the fact that the doctors say her cancer is still spreading - she is still eating great, wants to play and my mom feels the Eva’s Blend Formula is what really perks Vera up.” -Nicole

🐾

Any animal who needs an immunity boost will benefit from consistent use of our Eva’s Blend Formula- this product combines the Power of Full 🌈 Spectrum CBD with the tumor fighting- immunity power of Turkey Tail Mushroom.

🐾

CBD also modulates the THC receptor and is essentially a “down regulator” of THC... as such the Cannimal Gold Concentrate can assist animals dealing with the effects of high doses of THC (such as RIck Simpson Oil) in their medical treatment.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

It does appear however, that there are certain key elements for success:

  • Treatment needs to start early in cancer tumor diagnosis

  • The quality of the oil and consistency of the oil used for treatment

  • Oil needs to be tested and proven to be Pesticide, Metals and Toxin free.

  • Omega 3 rich diet free from contaminants an processed foods.

  • Strong belief it can work and commitment to the treatment is necessary!

A Must Know for Modern Pet Health: The Endocannabinoid System
The Endocannabinoid System has receptors throughout the body.

The Endocannabinoid System has receptors throughout the body.

Pet owners are often guilty of anthropomorphizing their beloved pets- this is the act of giving animals human characteristics. The truth is, we may have a good reason to do so!

Research has, in fact, found that our animals have more likeness to humans than we really knew: studies have shown animals have 70% of same biological and physical characteristics as their human counterparts.

Given this information, it is safe to say our pets have an endocannabinoid system as well. With the exception of insects, research has shown that every animal has an endocannabinoid system.

neuronswithfilter.jpg

What is an endocannabinoid system?

This unique system is the network of receptors within our bodies which regulate and activate cannabinoids. Cannabinoids include both endocannabinoids (naturally occurring cannabinoids already present within the body) and exo-cannabinoids(compounds that are found outside that body that mimic these endocannabinoids.) The exo-cannabinoids found in plants such as CBD, THC, or CBG found in the powerful plant Hemp or Cannabis Sativa plant are also called phyto-cannabinoids.

When our pets’ bodies or minds are out of balance and end up in disease state such as pain, inflammation, stress, or even cancer, the activation of the cannabinoid receptors is potentially helpful in treating these imbalances in a natural and effective way without the side effects of over the counter drugs and pharmaceuticals.

The big question is: is it safe to give your beloved furry friend CBD?

Any conscientious animal lover hates to see their animals suffer from pain, stress, or disease, right?

Due to the restrictions on research into CBD and THC in the US, clinical trials are difficult to conduct or obtain. However, there is scientific data that supports the effective use of these cannabinoids for a myriad of ailments.

However, one important thing has been shown in scientific studies: dogs metabolize cannabinoids in a different way than their human friends. How so? Read on.

The mammalian body is a community of trillions of different cells. Each cell has receptors. The Endocannabinoid system is a part of the body's cellular system that regulates certain receptors- CB1 and CB2. These receptors are responsible for maintaining homeostasis.

The mammalian body is a community of trillions of different cells. Each cell has receptors. The Endocannabinoid system is a part of the body's cellular system that regulates certain receptors- CB1 and CB2. These receptors are responsible for maintaining homeostasis.

In the endocannabinoid system, the 2-AG and anandamide are the primary messenger endo-cannabinoids. These compounds activate CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and other areas such as the digestive system and the skin.  In dogs, CBD binds to these receptors for a longer duration, and evokes long-lasting therapeutic response without toxic side effects. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1806942

Studies on dogs show that CBD spreads throughout the body quickly and is followed by prolonged elimination with a terminal half-life of 9 hours. In fact the study showed that total clearance of CBD from the dog’s body could take up to about 17 hours after that initial administration.

This might be why CBD can produce immediate as well as prolonged therapeutic relief in animals such as dogs, cats, and horses.

Every animal deserves a safe and effective treatment for the imbalance their minds and bodies encounter from the food, water, and environment.

Cannabidiol: A New Option for Pets in Pain

Excerpts By: Dr. Micheal Petty is a faculty member of the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in Wellington, Florida, and owner of Arbor Pointe Veterinary Hospital in Canton, Michigan.

Caring for our older animals can be challenging when using over the counter pharmaceuticals. This article offers excerpts and perspectives of one Veterinarian who specializes in Canine Pain and Rehabilitation.

Caring for our older animals can be challenging when using over the counter pharmaceuticals. This article offers excerpts and perspectives of one Veterinarian who specializes in Canine Pain and Rehabilitation.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been receiving increasing attention for its use in the treatment of pain in veterinary medicine. Unlike marijuana, which is a class 1 substance that contains varying levels of its active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol is an extract of the  plant that has THC levels lower than 0.3 percent.

KEEPING THE BODY BALANCE

CBD affects the endocannabinoid receptors, which are located in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Endocannabinoid receptors are very important as they function to maintain body homeostasis.

CBD is deeply involved in the neural transmissions needed to maintain homeostasis- helping keep the body in a normal and healthy state.

Although we’re focusing here on the use of CBD for pain in animals, other known actions in humans include the down regulation of anxiety, noise phobia, epilepsy, inflammation, emesis and anorexia, among other actions.

The “magic” of treatments that both upregulate and downregulate neural transmissions is that they always act to move the body toward a normal state and therefore don’t shift things in the wrong direction.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD AND A PHARMACEUTICAL?

CBD works quite unlike many pharmaceuticals. Most pharmaceuticals only stimulate upregulation or downregulation, making it possible to move body systems out of their normal or homeostatic state. Because CBD works toward homeostasis, it doesn’t do this, making unwanted side effects rare and giving CBD a good safety profile.

Growing old gracefully- and pain free!

Growing old gracefully- and pain free!

There is almost no published research on the use of CBD in animals. Some research is being performed at Colorado State University on the use of CBD for pain currently, but as with most research projects, the results won’t be available for some time. Therefore, practitioners who want to recommend or dispense CBD must do so based on information from anecdotal evidence—one of the worst types of evidence to rely on.

As a pain practitioner, I will carefully consider utilizing treatments with little or no research behind them as long as there don’t seem to be reports of serious adverse events. Our drug armamentarium for pain in veterinary medicine seems woefully deficient, especially when we’re dealing with a patient that doesn’t respond to proven and approved therapies.

I have encouraged many of my clients to use CBD to treat the pain of degenerative joint disease and other chronic conditions in their pets. The results have been mixed—but that’s true of proven treatments such as Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) therapy as well.

"In patients where CBD has worked, my clients have reported a decrease in pain, improved sleep patterns, increased appetite and improved attitude, all leading to an overall improvement in quality of life." -Dr. PeRRY

Epilepsy is a persistent (chronic) condition of the brain.  It involves unpredictable abnormal electrical discharges or misfiring of brain cells (neurons).  This misfiring in the brain can cause episodes of bodily convulsions, loss of coordination, loss of consciousness or altered sensory states.

There can be serious side effects resulting from the use of conventional anticonvulsants. These can include nausea, headaches, loss of hair, swelling of gum tissue, impotence, depression, poor coordination (ataxia), liver failure, depressed blood counts, sedation, slurring of speech, unsteadiness, double vision, weight gain, hyperactivity (in children), sleep disturbances, irritability, gum dysplasia, hirsutism (excessive growth of hair) and changes in mood.

Fortunately, Cannabis has well documented relief for humans as well as animals who find themselves battling this disorder. Cannabis has been used to treat epilepsy since at least medieval Arabia and sixteenth-century Southeast Asia. In 1839 Dr. William O’Shaughnessy introduced Cannabis to Western medicine and it was used to treat convulsions caused by tetanus (lockjaw) and hydrophobia (rabies) along with puerperal convulsions, chorea, and strychnine poisoning.

A 2013 study published by the British Journal of Pharmacology found that marijuana can stop seizures due to its “significant anticonvulsant effects.” Researchers used an extract made from the whole cannabis plant. Using the substance on a number of animal models such as rats and mice, they found that the extract was able to effectively stop seizures.

Researchers noted, “Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that cannabis extracts rich in CBDV and CBD can exert significant anticonvulsant effects… These findings strongly support the further clinical development of CBDV BDSs for treatment of epilepsy.”

Dr. Paul Consroe of the University of Arizona suggests that CBD may have distinctive therapeutic value as an anticonvulsant in and of itself. He found that while high doses of THC can trigger convulsions in seizure susceptible animals, the administration of cannabidiol (CBD) in similar or higher does not cause convulsions.  His studies concluded that CBD might have powerful anticonvulsant properties, which counteract the muscle-exciting effects of THC when both compounds are delivered to the body in marijuana.

DID YOU KNOW?

Colorado State University is currently studying the safety and efficacy of CBD in dogs with epilepsy and arthritis.

Dr. Stephanie McGrath is the lead researcher for CSU's study on the efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of epilepsy and osteoarthritis in dogs.

Dr. Stephanie McGrath is the lead researcher for CSU's study on the efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of epilepsy and osteoarthritis in dogs.

A non-psychoactive cannabis compound, CBD has shown promise as an anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-epilepsy, and pain-relieving agent in preclinical studies and a small number of clinical trials.

After Colorado legalized adult use marijuana in 2012, CSU veterinary neurologist Dr. Stephanie McGrath noticed that more pet owners and vets inquired about the safety and efficacy of administering CBD to dogs. Without qualified, peer-reviewed scientific studies on CBD products for pets, owners were giving CBD to their dogs in the hopes of addressing seizures, pain, and anxiety brought on by thunderstorms and fireworks.

After receiving an increase in cannabis-related research requests, CSU veterinarians have set out to offer pet owners and vets more information on CBD’s potential for offering relief to pets.

Last spring, the CSU team conducted its first cannabis-related study, investigating the safety of CBD in healthy dogs. The study compared three dosing methods – capsule, tincture, and topical cream – tincture was found to be the best for safety and measurement in the bloodstream.

Following these results, CSU gave the go-ahead for more clinical trials. Researchers are enrolling dogs for two 12-week, double blind crossover clinical trials that will measure the effectiveness of CBD hemp oil for arthritis.

CBD has demonstrated the ability to reduce or even eliminate seizures (Blair, Deshpande & DeLorenzo, 2015) (Rosenberg, Tsien, Whalley & Devinsky, 2015) (Szaflarski & Bebin, 2014) (Devinsky, et al., 2014). Research also finds that cannabis is effective in the treatment of severe pediatric epilepsy disorders like Dravet syndrome, Doose syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (Porter & Jacobson, 2013). CBD has also been shown to improve sleep (53%), alertness (71%), and mood (63%) in epileptic children (Hussain, et al., 2015).

In the CSU study, pet owners will be tasked with keeping an ongoing log to track seizure activity, all the while not knowing whether their dog is receiving the CBD oil or a placebo. After six weeks, each dog will receive the opposite solution for the second half of the trial. The dogs will also be subjected to blood tests every four weeks throughout the 12-weeks.

Many veterinarians and scientists continue to be hesitant to recommend CBD, concerned with a lack of clinical research. Some may offer pet owners guidance on cannabis products for their animals, but veterinarians are as of now not allowed to prescribe any cannabis products.

Big news! The AVMA Gets Behind Cannabis Rescheduling!!

Via Leafly.com

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) approved a resolution at its conference last month to begin exploring how to advocate that cannabis be rescheduled federally, moving it from Schedule I to Schedule II. The move would increase opportunities to research cannabis for therapeutic use among both animals and humans.

“The House APPROVED recommending that the AVMA Board of Directors investigate working with other research organizations and medical stakeholders to reclassify cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 to facilitate research opportunities for veterinary and human medical uses,” the organization said in a resolution posted on its website.

Founded in 1863, the nonprofit AVMA boasts more than 89,000 members. The organization “is being encouraged by its members to develop and distribute literature on marijuana’s legal status, research on its medical uses and ‘the signs, symptoms, and treatment of cannabis toxicosis in animals.’”

Although cannabis is legal for medical use among humans in 29 states, it’s still illegal at the federal level, which means vets aren’t legally able to prescribe medical marijuana to animals. Hemp CBD is LEGAL TO SHIP across state lines.

Currently, the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science is conducting two clinical trials examining the effects of cannabis in dogs. One study is exploring CBD’s effects on canine epilepsy, while the other is looking at CBD as a possible osteoarthritis treatment.

CSU is still recruiting animals for the study.

Other vets are calling for more research in order to better understand possible health risks to animals, which can be affected by cannabis more severely than humans. Dr. Dick Sullivan of California said at the Veterinary Information Forum on July 20. “We are definitely seeing an increase in toxicity cases. For that reason alone, we need research and our national association to write a letter or petition the FDA to allow us to do research and get good information to our clients because they are asking us, and our obligation, morally and ethically, is to address these cases.”

Full Spectrum CBD vs Isolate – What is the difference?

Full spectrum. Isolate. Whole Plant. Phyto Rich. Extract. Argh.

When I go online and read the confusion pet owners and others encounter when trying to choose a product that is right for their pet, it gets downright mindboggling.

What is Full Spectrum Oil?

The best way to think of full spectrum oil is it gives you:

The FULL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA EFFECT!

Imagine yourself at the symphony- the music should move you, it makes you feel something inside that is beautiful and profound. The effect of ISOLATE is like a single instrument. It will make a noise. It might even make you feel something great, but it won't last as long, and it won't "hit" you in the same way.

Pups on stage. Full Spectrum oil's effect should feel similar to hearing a full symphony orchestra. An isolate or distilled oil product will have the effect of a single instrument- you might be able to hear it but it won't have the same "moving" experience and it won't last as long.

In essence, Full Spectrum means the Cannabis oil will contain a high percentage of the compounds, cannabinoids, and other natural terpenes found in the plant in its natural state.

Keep in mind cannabis contains a complex of over 500 therapeutic bioactive compounds. This spectrum of molecules contains not only the cannabinoids and terpenes full of the medicinal qualities people seek, but also a plethora of other lesser-known but equally important elements such as flavonoids, phenolic amides, and sterols.

The majority of these cannabinoids and terpenes are found in the trichomes, the glandular stalks and bulbous heads that exist on the cannabis plant. Terpenes are the essential oils that give cannabis its different flavors and aromas and help to shape the healing qualities of each concentrate.

A close up of the trichomes on a cannabis plant where the powerful cannabinoids and terpenes are found. As the plant goes through the extraction process, many of these compounds are lost. Full Spectrum concentrates and oils contain these potent qualities of the plant.

When the plant is extracted for "Full Spectrum," the properties and components that are part of that – such as terpenes and CBD, for example – are still existent. The molecules of the “whole plant” remain intact in the processed extracted oil. In this extraction process, there is little to no loss of any of the other compounds hence allowing for what is called the “full entourage effect,” which is derived from the whole plant extraction method.

On the other hand we have the Isolate method. Oil is processed until it forms crystals. The crystals are then processed into a powder. In this extraction method, the powder or “isolate” results in a single molecular compound of strictly CBD- there are absolutely no other molecular compounds of value found in the powder.

Full Spectrum Oil vs Isolate: What is better?

The debate that seems to arise in the industry is the medicinal values of one versus the other. Although it may seem counterintuitive, research so far indicates that full-spectrum CBD is more effective than isolate.

According to a study done at the Lautenberg Center for General Tumor Immunology in Jerusalem, the effectiveness of isolated CBD versus full-spectrum CBD extract concluded that CBD isolate yields a “bell-curve” of effectiveness. Studies proved that the isolate becomes less effective over time, while full-spectrum CBD continued to be effective in providing pain relief. See study here

How much CBD does my animal need?

TAKE THE TIME TO READ AND STUDY THIS PAGE!

Get the most out of your investment in CBD.

Dosing is one of the most common questions- here at Cannimal we recommend you always "titrate up"- meaning start with the lowest recommended dose and go up from there based on observation of your pet's response.

Need help?

Cannabinoids (CBD AND THC) interact with the Endocannabinoid system. This system of receptors is all over the body- but most are in the brain, gut, and skin. This system regulates homeostasis or "balance" in the body.

The endocannabinoid system may be "activated" differently at different times- and can vary from animal to animal. Please keep in mind: every animal will have a unique endocannabinoid system- ie. one dog who weighs 20 pounds may need 2-3x more than another dog who weighs 20 pounds! This is why close observation and consistent dosing is extremely important when supplementing an animal with CBD.

5 Keys to Successfully Dosing Cannimal's CBD Formulas

  1. Start with a low dose- for small animals under 40 pounds start with 1 pump twice a day of our 150mg formulas. For larger animals over 40 lbs, start with 2 pumps twice a day of our 250mg formula.

Our 150mg product is appx 2.5 mg per pump.

Our 250mg product is appx 5mg per pump.

Our 2000mg Equine product is appx 40mg per ml.

2. Apply directly in mouth- placing CBD in food lowers it's bioavailability. Use our pump bottle to administer directly in mouth or let them lick out of a bowl.

Ingesting CBD in food or a treat, despite being the easiest method of delivery,

is not particularly efficient at absorbing CBD in high concentrations

and can take as long as two hours to work.

AS SOON AS CBD ENTERS THE GUT YOU LOSE up TO 40% of THE DOSE!!

If you have not had good results with ANY CBD product, this may be the reason.

STOP putting it in your animal’s food.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine published a study, (Ujvary and Hanus, 2016), detailing how the liver metabolizes CBD compounds. Called the “first pass effect”, CYP450 oxidases enzymes in the liver, which have mixed functions, break CBD down, reducing cannabidiol concentration significantly before sending the leftovers to the bloodstream.

JUST SAY NO TO GLASS DROPPERS.

Cannimal does not use glass droppers. WHY? Glass droppers can break in the mouth and also run the risk of cross contamination of your very valuable investment.

3. Observe- keep a close eye on your animal's reaction. Wait 30 minutes.

(30 minutes is the CLINICALLY PROVEN ONSET for Cannabidiol (CBD).)

Look for what I call The Relaxation Response.

  1. Muscle Tone Softens

  2. Ears and eyes get softer, quieter, less fidget-y.

4. If your animal seems to have no relaxation response, administer a 2nd dose.

This desired “RELAXATION RESPONSE” applies to both pain and anxiety (How do you feel after your pain is relieved? Do you feel more relaxed? Do you feel more relieved?)

Keep titrating up (giving another small dose) every 30 minutes until you get a desired response- this is your animals’ baseline dose.

5. Be consistent - for best results administer Cannimal CBD formulas everyday at the same time.

Chronic conditions such as pain and inflammation may take up to 7 days of consistent administration before you see improved mobility.

6. Take an active role in your animal's healing- watch for signs of improvement and titrate up (or down) based on your observations.

*Remember no 2 animals are the same. CBD is not a pharmaceutical drug created to produce a "generic" response. CBD works with the Endocannabinoid System- which may need more or less activation on a daily basis based on its current state of "homeostasis."

What is the Difference between Cannabis and Hemp?
636262993635429633-GettyImages-479747496.jpg

Cannabis and Hemp both derive of the same family (cannabinaceae) and genus (Cannabis). This can be extremely confusing for those new to this food supplement.  While its true that Hemp and Cannabis both come from the same plant - Cannabis Sativa- they are grown and sold for very different purposes.

The government requires vendors use the term "Hemp" products to  to denote the products they sell have less than .03% THC.

Cannabis products are products with more than .03% THC.

Cannimal's Hemp Extract is sourced from high quality, pesticide free, whole plant Hemp.
